Week 2 Origination

Reading Quiz - John Maeda, Laws of Simplicity: Law 1 – Reduce

What does the acronym SHE mean according to the book?

Shrink: Lessening the complexity of a product
Hide: Hiding complexity of a product i.e. behind tabs and menus. Features should still be available, but not in your face, but still easy to use when needed.
Embody: Perceived excellence of product. Perception of quality

Define ‘humanist technologist’

designing for the human need. Technology easier for people to use?"I do because
i care, i do because i can."

How can you apply the notion of reduce to your own design process? (give a specific example)

less clutter on websites

From what you have read in Chapter 1, explain the relationship between complexity and simplicity (give 3 specific examples from the book OR your own experiences)

Balance of simplicity and complexity without losing functionality

Thinking Game - Communication

Divide into pairs
One person in each pair creates a card with a simple task written on it Communicate the task to your partner any non-verbal way you like. Recognisable words are not allowed - gestures, sounds, tone of voice only. The exercise finishes when the task description has been recognised
Swap and repeat

Presentation: IDEO Deep Dive

What type of organisation is IDEO?
A design company

What are the different processes they employ in design research?
break into groups and each group come up with a prototype. Present to everyone. Then they select the best aspects out of each design and design the final product.

How did they define the range and scope of the problem?
researched problems associated with current trolleys and came up with ideas on how to solve them.

How could you apply their methodology to developing a concept for your exhibition piece?
present idea to the team, find out if acceptable or what changes need to be made.

Pick a class member from the other discipline and develop a test concept for presentation at 11:30am today.
My ideas for the exhibition are to exhibit illustration class major project, not sure what it is yet?
As I have been doing certificate quite sporadically over the many years while working full time, not currently doing a 3d class so not currently doing a project, can however display a project from when I did unit, plus a number of designs from other units over the years, all up maybe 3 or 4 pieces, although some of these have been exhibited before, I have not been involved in the hanging/exhibition phase, only submitted works and others hung them for me.
Not sure how well collaboration will go though as I can't make Fridays collaboration days. Maybe I could have a spokesperson from the class on by behalf?!! and liaise with them after hours??

Found out that I answered this wrongly, so

Queenie and I got together and came up with a concept on what we could display at our exhibition. We decided on possibly designing a childrens story book as we a both also doing the hand illustration class and could come up with some drawings from there. As I have some experience with Indesign and publications layout, I could layout the book.  I think Queenie might be a better drawer than me, however we will see what we can come up with.  Topic is yet to be decided, we will need to reasearch and get some ideas and decide, write a story and draw illustrations to suit, then layout book.

At the exhibition we could display a hard copy and maybe a computer flip through version - ipod, on Mac or camera?

  1. Denise - big improvement this week. Well done. You covered everything. Now all you need is a bit of help with formatting your text to remove unwanted space - maybe Paul can help.

ah - you need an IMAGE + commentary as well
Check the Task 01 Blog Creation sheet for weekly requirements!

    Thanks. :-)
