Week 4 - Origination

Reading Quiz - John Maeda, Laws of Simplicity: Law 3 – Time

What is the major benefit of saving time?

It gives you more time to do other things.

How do designers integrate time into their products?

Consumers don’t like to waste time, so the product must not be too complex or appear to waste their time.

John Maeda used examples such as:

·        Apple Ipod Shuffle – has a single led, smaller, lower priced, resistant to wear, choosed music randomly for the user.

·        Casino – no clocks and windows to reveal time of day, creating illusion that time is of no pressing concern.

·        Time Progress bar – user perceives task is completed in less time than if no progress bar is shown.

·        Crosswalk signals – showing progress bar or numerical countdown display showing time remaining.

Explain the relationship between making waiting shorter with making waiting more tolerable

Hiding doesn’t save time it creates the illusion that time is no of pressing concern. When time is saved, or appears so, the complex feels simpler.  When speeding up a process isn’t an option, giving extra care to a customer makes the experience more tolerable. Saving time is therefore the trade off between quantitatively vast versus the qualitatively fast– ie giving them cookies

How can you use your timeline to increase your own efficiency as a designer?

Prioritise and plan, don’t get too bogged down on one thing. Its good to record how long certain tasks can take so you can provide customers with estimated time it takes to do things – when asked how long things will take.

Briefly outline an event or activity in which you are adept at time saving?

Cooking a big batch of food to make frozen dinners

Using keyboard shortcuts.

What part of your design/multimedia process do you need to improve at, in terms of saving time?

Too much time researching and trying to get ideas, not giving me enough time to create it.

Social media marketing - refers to the process of gaining website traffic or attention through social media sites.

Social media marketing programs usually center on efforts to create content that attracts attention and encourages readers to share it with their social networks. A corporate message spreads from user to user and presumably resonates because it appears to come from a trusted, third-party source, as opposed to the brand or company itself. Hence, this form of marketing is driven by word-of-mouth, meaning it results in earned media rather than paid media.

Social media has become a platform that is easily accessible to anyone with internet access. Increased communication for organizations fosters brand awareness and often, improved customer service. Additionally, social media serves as a relatively inexpensive platform for organizations to implement marketing campaigns.”

United Breaks Guitars

"United Breaks Guitars - is a protest song by Canadian musician Dave Carroll and his band, Sons of Maxwell. It chronicles a real-life experience of how his guitar was broken during a trip on United Airlines in 2008, and the subsequent reaction from the airline. The song became an immediate YouTube and iTunes hit upon its release in July 2009 and a public relations embarrassment for the airline.
Dave wrote three songs/videos in total on his experience dealing with United airlines – more info can be viewed at: http://www.davecarrollmusic.com/music/ubg/
